Detective First Grade Didarul Islam
Detective First Grade Didarul Islam (1989–2025) was a dedicated member of the NYPD who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting others.
Born in Bangladesh and raised in the United States, Islam fulfilled a lifelong dream when he joined the NYPD in 2021, serving the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. Known for his commitment to service, he previously worked as a New York City school safety agent.
On July 28, 2025, while working an NYPD-authorized security detail at 345 Park Avenue, he was killed while confronting an active shooter. For his bravery, he was posthumously promoted to Detective First Grade, becoming the first NYPD officer of Bangladeshi descent to be killed in the line of duty.
He is remembered as a devoted family man who is survived by his wife and three children. His legacy continues through the Folds of Honor scholarship program, which supports his children’s education, and ongoing efforts to honor his service through community legislation.
